Photoshop gives you the most control of any thumbnail design tool โ€” precise background removal, advanced text effects, layer blending, and the ability to composite multiple images seamlessly. This step-by-step guide walks you through creating a professional YouTube thumbnail from scratch.

๐Ÿ’ก Don't have Photoshop? Try Photopea (photopea.com) โ€” a free, browser-based alternative with nearly identical tools and interface. All steps in this guide work in Photopea too.

Step-by-Step: Create a Thumbnail in Photoshop

1
Create a new document at the correct size Go to File โ†’ New. Set Width: 1280px, Height: 720px, Resolution: 72 PPI, Color Mode: RGB Color, 8 bit. Click Create. This is your thumbnail canvas.
2
Set up your background Use the Paint Bucket tool (G) to fill the background with your chosen color. Or go to Layer โ†’ New Fill Layer โ†’ Solid Color for a non-destructive background. For a gradient: Layer โ†’ New Fill Layer โ†’ Gradient.
3
Place your photo Go to File โ†’ Place Embedded and select your photo. Resize and position it using the Transform handles. Press Enter to confirm. Your photo is now a Smart Object โ€” you can resize it non-destructively anytime.
4
Remove the background from your photo Select your photo layer. Go to Select โ†’ Subject (Photoshop AI automatically selects the subject). Then go to Select โ†’ Inverse, and press Delete to remove the background. Refine the edge using Select โ†’ Select and Mask for clean hair and edges.
5
Add a glow or drop shadow behind your subject Double-click the subject layer โ†’ Layer Style. Add Outer Glow or Drop Shadow to separate your subject from the background. A subtle colored glow that contrasts with the background adds depth and professional polish.
6
Add your text Select the Type tool (T). Click on the canvas and type your headline (3โ€“5 words, ALL CAPS). Choose a bold font like Impact or Bebas Neue. Set the size to 120โ€“180pt. Choose a color that contrasts with your background.
7
Add a stroke and drop shadow to your text Double-click the text layer โ†’ Layer Style. Add: Stroke (3โ€“5px, black or white), Drop Shadow (distance 3, spread 5, size 8, black). This ensures your text is readable on any background color.
8
Add graphic elements (optional) Arrows, shapes, highlight boxes behind text, and icons can be drawn with the Shape tool (U). Keep it simple โ€” no more than 1โ€“2 additional graphic elements.
9
Preview at small size Go to View โ†’ Zoom Out until the canvas is about 20โ€“25% size. This simulates the thumbnail in the YouTube feed. If text is unreadable or elements are unclear, go back and make them bigger or bolder.
10
Export for YouTube Go to File โ†’ Export โ†’ Export As. Choose JPG, quality 90โ€“95%. Make sure the file size is under 2MB. Click Export and save. Upload directly to YouTube Studio.
โœ… Save as PSD: Always save your Photoshop file as a .PSD before exporting. This keeps all your layers editable โ€” so you can swap the background, update the text, or create variations for future videos in minutes.
